Describe your work a little bit.
Sure! but it's tough, to be general I try to catch the glistening balance of mapping something outside of me that is naive and omnipotent using an illustrative painterly style and maintaining hyper honesty while expressing what you wont know. Does that make me sound like a jerk? Okay little people quietly placed softly affecting each other. Who am I?
Music heavy on your playlist these days?
I've been listening to a lot of local pop stuff like Aleks and the Ramps, Milk Teddy, the Townhouses, Oscar + Martin, Megastick Fanfare, it's nice to be able to go see your favourite bands every few weeks for a couple of bucks. Then some Javelin, John Maus, Trouble Books, Cannibal Ox, KMD, Das Racist, Dan Deacon, King Khan and BBQ. I like listening to new music when I'm painting though, stops me from getting distracted. I also put on podcasts so I don't get lonely in the studio.
Favorite mediums to work within?

Maybe yours? I'd really like to help all the people I believe work hard and make the stuff I love get validation and recognition. I wanted to become a fire engine, I've kind've outgrown that.

Describe your work a little bit.
I use hard-edge geometric shapes and loose marks to articulate the relationship between natural and man-made structures. The result is an extraction or sample from the conglomeration of these opposite forms of environment.

No Gold, Brasstronaut, and Radiozero podcasts for the old home. Belle and Sebastian for the new home.
Favorite mediums to work within?
My paintings are mostly acrylic and spray paint, but recently I have been using wood and glass to experiment with sculpture and installation.

Describe your work a little bit.
I'm a collage artist and for the last few years i have really stuck to this medium. I rarely combine images together, instead i generally work from multiple prints of the same image to produce work. So the source image is still very visible, just warped and bent out of shape. Perspective and composition can change quite drastically while still retaining the original content.
Music heavy on your playlist these days?
Dutch Techno and Ethiopian groove. And i'm always head banging wildly to the tunes of my old studio pal the NIALLIST.

Paintings and installations from San Francisco based Mario Martinez (Mars-1), his first solo show in San Francisco since 2005.
In our front gallery, we'll be opening 11.11.11 featuring curated paintings and illustrations from a group of international artists that have caught our eye in the last year. These are some of the most exciting visual artists emerging today. Artists include Nathan Brown (Montreal), Ryan Bubnis (Portland), Huey Crowley (New York City), Ryan De La Hoz (San Francisco), Lola Dupre (Glasgow, Scotland), Hamishi (Melbourne), Russell Leng (Vancouver), Charles Martin (New York City), Eric Shaw (San Francisco), and Winnie Truong (Toronto).
Please join us in our 3,000 square foot temporary gallery space in the Inner Richmond as they complete repairs at our 248 Fillmore space due to Sept 27's fire (pictures). Drinks shall be served. Spent the weekend painting and working on the temporary FFDG space at 248 Clement.
Damn, it takes a lot of paint (and beer) to paint 2,500 square feet... And I'll tell you what, it doesn't matter what day it is, Burma Superstar has a line out front from like 5pm till 10pm. People go bonkers for that place, and well, because it's damn tasty.
FFDG is moving (temporarily) to 248 Clement St @4th Ave (due to the fire) with our first opening for Mario Martinez (Mars-1) set for Thursday, Nov 10th (7-10pm).
Signed the lease today. Needs some white paint thrown about here and there and a little TLC and she's ready to go.
Thanks to Derek and Jamie at Park Life who told us about the space that we get to call home until 248 Fillmore is ready to move back into... Hope we don't get too used to having such a large space. After we fix 'er up, she'll be a real beaut!
We're happy to report that FFDG will open at a temporary gallery space located at 248 Clement St @4th on Thursday, November 10th. We will be there until either 248 Fillmore is repaired and we can move back or if Fillmore is down for good and we need to find a new permanent home.

In case you didn't know yet, there was a massive 4 alarm fire in Fecal Face's building last Tuesday evening (photos) which displaced not only us from the building but 31 residents from the apartments above.
Tuesday evening you can do something to help those effected as there's a Haight and Fillmore Fire Relief Fundraiser at the Peacock Lounge with prizes, food, drinks and a whole lot more. Get there and give a little something back to help your fellow San Franciscans!

On Tuesday at around 4pm we were working away on the site/ answering emails when a crazed lady pounds on our door and yells, "the building is on fire. Get out!". Unfortunately, this is the second time we've heard this yelled at us while working at Fecal Face.
Thinking it was going to be another similar grab a few things, stand back while the SFFD do their thing, and in 30 minutes, we're back inside and back to work. Not this time. Not this time at all. We're out of the gallery and space there at 248 Fillmore for who knows how long till we're back in our beloved space next to our friends at Estela's and Three Twins.
Me on NBC channel 11 news Tuesday night. I was also on KTVU as well.

Thinking we were possibly over reacting, we grad Damon Soule's paintings from the gallery walls and quickly try to figure out where we can take them as screaming fire trucks race to the scene. Luckily, our friend Mike Midden lives across the street and let us store the paintings there while we figure things out... Weird bangs and explosions above our heads/ breaking glass around us, we frantically grabbed art, laptops, cameras, etc.
Flames were shooting 6 feet out the corner apartment's window. Distant/ nearby sirens continued to descend to our corner of Haight and Fillmore. At one point, it became clear there was no going back inside as firemen broke down the door next to ours that leads to the stairway. A healthy crowd builds behind the yellow caution tape. We stand nervously watching the fire rage and build. Thick black smoke billows from the roof as the late afternoon breeze begins sweeping the flames across the building from one side to the next.
Pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?
Watching the flames lick the next building over, we hope that the massive amounts of water would somehow filter away from our ceilings as gallons and gallons of toxic fire water make their way down from the top floors.
After holding our breath for 30 minutes, we know there's nothing we can do but fret. It's determined that a strong beer is needed to calm frayed nerves. We had beers at Cafe Soleil where next to us sat a resident of the building also calming his nerves with a beer. We chat and hope that the fire/ smoke/ water damage escaped our places. It wasn't the case, at least for us.
Tip toeing around a web of fire hoses we avoid the raining water and enter the gallery where a rush of heat and smoke stink past our noses. Water is poring down in umpteen places from the ceiling as we trek across a foot of water on the floor in search for items/ art that may still be safe. Our cabinet contents were dry. Travis Millard's and Mel Kadel's work, which was probably in the only part of the back area that avoided water, was untouched, thank God (we built those shelves where the work sat just a month ago saving us from having to claim their art as a loss).
Thanks to Harley and everyone at Upper Playground and neighbors who formed a human chain to move items and art from the drenched gallery to Upper Playground's back room. A lot was saved and items that were ruined by the water damage can be replaced. Our disappointment by having to work from home is nothing compared to those who not only lost their apartments but their personal items as well. Thankfully no one was injured.. Animals were rescued and all will move on. We just hope that the contractors are building ninjas so we can get back in soon and we can get back to hosting shows.

Thankfully we purchased a good insurance plan when we moved in which covers fire damage like this. SO glad we kept up with the payments.

Get on your lab coats because we're about to get all Mr. Wizard up here at Fecal Face... Well, sort of. Mr. Wizard was way more entertaining than a water test blog.
If you live in San Francisco you most likely live and work in a pretty old building with absolutely no knowledge of its plumbing. If you're also like us you drink the tap water because, all those plastic water bottles are a complete waste and, we here in San Francisco have some of the nation's best water... But is it? I mean we use a Brita here @FFDG, but shit, we have no idea if the pipes contain lead or something. After we started getting some headaches, we thought it might be a good idea to buy a little kit and test the water. ~exciting conclusion.
Damon Soule's third solo show Then What Happened opens @FFDG in San Francisco Saturday, August 20th (7-10pm). Gerald Anekwe swung by his studio a couple weeks back to see what he has brewing for his show.
San Francisco Art Institute graduate, Damon Soule's newest paintings take what he's been doing for years further into a mind bending reality. Beautiful.
You've had two solo shows with FFDG in the past, what are some of the things you are taking into consideration while working on this one?
FFDG is a small space, so it's a great place to put together a cohesive experience. That's all you really have to worry about.
How would you describe your work to someone?
Aw man, that's always hard. I usually just describe it as crazy paintings. If I was painting things that I could describe in a simple sound bite, I would be disappointed with myself.

In addition to SF, you've lived in Portland and NYC. What are some of the things you've enjoyed about living and working in these cities?
NYC is great because you can always get something to eat nearby anytime of day. Portland is cool because people are relaxed and know how to have fun. No one'ss really trying very hard there which I find refreshing.
What brought you back to SF?
I love the community vibe in the Bay Area. It feels like things are really happening which I didn't get in NYC. That may be just my perception but since that's how I feel, I had to come back here. As far as I'm concerned SF rules! However, I like to keep it fresh and that means not getting too comfortable.

You've been exhibiting for over a decade, what would you say is the most important thing you've learned along the way?
Keep it personal and challenge yourself. If you get bored, flip it upside down. Life is short, so don't get stuck in a rut.

The history of Modern art is characterized by a series of movements that rewrote the established rulebook of what art should be that had been in place for centuries. Those movements needed to happen. That book needed to be rewritten. Unfortunately, part of this transition involved diminishing the importance of the real craft of painting, painterly skill and the celebration thereof.
Shawn Barber re-embraces that true craft; the craft of Velasquez and of Van Dyke, two masters that he lists as influences. His work goes back to the roots of what makes great art. Opening tonight, Friday May 23rd (7-10pm) at Park Life in the Inner Richmond (220 Clement St) is Again Home Again featuring works from the duo Jacob Mcgraw-Mikelson & Rachell Sumpter who split time living in Sacramento and a tiny island at the top of Pudget Sound with their children.
Jacob Magraw will be showing embroidery pieces on cloth along with painted, gouache works on paper --- Rachell Sumpter paints scenes of colored splendor dropped into scenes of desolate wilderness. ~show details
NYC --- A new graffiti abatement program put forth by the police commissioner has beat cops carrying cans of spray paint to fill in and cover graffiti artists work in an effort to clean up the city --> Many cops are thinking it's a waste of resources, but we're waiting to see someone make a project of it. Maybe instructions for the cops on where to fill-in?
The NYPD is arming its cops with cans of spray paint and giving them art-class-style lessons to tackle the scourge of urban graffiti, The Post has learned.

If you like guns and boobs, head on over to the Shooting Gallery; just don't expect the work to be all cheap ploys and hot chicks. With Make Stuff by Peter Gronquist (Portland) in the main space and Morgan Slade's Snake in the Eagle's Shadow in the project space, there is plenty spectacle to be had, but if you look just beyond it, you might actually get something out of the shows.
Fifty24SF opened Street Anatomy, a new solo show by Austrian artist Nychos a week ago last Friday night. He's been steadily filling our city with murals over the last year, with one downtown on Geary St. last summer, and new ones both in the Haight and in Oakland within the last few weeks, but it was really great to see his work up close and in such detail.

In a filmmaker's thinking, we wish more videos were done in this style. Too much editing and music with a lacking in actual content. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Matt Wagner recently emailed over some photos from The Hellion Gallery in Tokyo, who recently put together a show with AJ Fosik (Portland) called Beast From a Foreign Land. The gallery gave twelve of Fosik's sculptures to twelve Japanese artists (including Hiro Kurata who is currently showing in our group show Salt the Skies) to paint, burn, or build upon.

Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne played host to a huge group exhibition a couple of weeks back, with "Gold Blood, Magic Weirdos" Curated by Melbourne artist Sean Morris. Gold Blood brought together 25 talented painters, illustrators and comic artists from Australia, the US, Singapore, England, France and Spain - and marked the end of the Magic Weirdos trilogy, following shows in Perth in 2012 and London in 2013.
San Francisco based Fecal Pal Jeremy Fish opened his latest solo show Hunting Trophies at LA's Mark Moore Gallery last week to massive crowds and cabin walls lined with imagery pertaining to modern conquest and obsession.
Well, John Felix Arnold III is at it again. This time, he and Carolyn LeBourgios packed an entire show into the back of a Prius and drove across the country to install it at Superchief Gallery in NYC. I met with him last week as he told me about the trip over delicious burritos at Taqueria Cancun (which is right across the street from FFDG and serves what I think is the best burrito in the city) as the self proclaimed "Only overweight artist in the game" spilled all the details.
Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.
The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.
With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Inspired by the many historical artists who have longed similar longings I discovered the beauty of artist residencies. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding
I just wanted to share with you a piece I recently finished which took me 4 years to complete. Titled "How To Lose Yourself Completely (The September Issue)", it consists of a copy of the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine (the issue they made the documentary about) with all faces masked with a sharpie, and everything else entirely whited out. 840 pages of fun. -Bryan Schnelle

Jeremy Fish opens Hunting Trophies tonight, Saturday April 5th, at the Los Angeles based Mark Moore Gallery. The show features new work from Fish inside the "hunting lodge" where viewers climb inside the head of the hunter and explore the history of all the animals he's killed.

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to quit my job, move out of my house, leave everything and travel again. So on August 21, 2013 I pushed a canoe packed full of gear into the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, along with four of my best friends. Exactly 100 days later, I arrived at a marina near the Gulf of Mexico in a sailboat.
